The Sun Butterflies Amulet

The elegant white butterflies rise in the clear vastness of the summer sky, celestial dancers moving against the golden sun.

This unique amulet has an overall length of about 17 inches, and the length of the beaded strands from the small barrel clasp to the amulet itself is 10.5 inches. The hand-sewn amulet pouch is crafted from double-thickness washable felt and measures 2.5 inches square. Both beaded strands and fringe are strung on gold and white waxed linen. The blue amulet pouch is edged in sky-blue and sunlight-gold seed beads and finished with an elegant beaded fringe continuing the sun and sky theme in more shades of gold and blue. The piece encompasses a wide variety of glass and acrylic beads that create a light, sunny, airy appearance. The double-stitched sun design is hand-appliquéd, and the two beautifully detailed butterflies are made of translucent pressed glass.

The butterfly has long been a symbol of transformation, beginning life as a lowly caterpillar and then emerging from the cocoon as a glorious winged being. These white butterflies are messengers of hope and rebirth, change and renewal. They dance in the brilliant sunlight and the clear, bright sky of consciousness as glorious symbols of a new golden age.

This is the second in a series of White Butterfly amulets. There will be more in the future.

Coyote Song Amulet

As the desert sun begins to set, dry mountains shift from the muted earth tones of mid-day to brilliantly lighted peaks in glowing carnelian shades. As the evening cools the coyotes sing their ancient song to the desert spirits. We listen in silence.

This unique amulet has an overall length of about 15.25 inches, and the length of the beaded strands from the small barrel clasp to the amulet itself is 10 inches. The hand-sewn amulet pouch is crafted from double-thickness washable felt and measures 2.25 x 2 inches. Beaded strands and fringe are strung on both orange and dark-brown waxed linen. The stone-brown amulet pouch is edged in deep-red seed beads and finished with an elaborate beaded fringe in sunset desert shades of blue, tan, orange, brown, copper, and red. The fringe encompasses a wide variety of glass, acrylic, metal, and painted wood beads evoking the thickets and grasses that dot the desert hillsides. The four-color desert sunset design is hand-appliquéd, and the three beautifully detailed tiny coyotes are Peruvian ceramic.

Coyote is a powerful symbol of survival. He can live just about anywhere and overcome almost any obstacle. Coyote is often a messenger of the desert spirits and the ancient ones who were here long before our modern world took form. In these difficult times we would do well to listen to coyote’s song and learn his stories of outwitting adversaries, overcoming hardship, and making the most of any circumstances. In tough times coyote is a wise guardian.

Desert Spring Flowers Necklace

This beautiful seed bead, carnelian, and green magnesite necklace evokes the spring flowers that carpet the deserts after the spring or summer rains.

The overall length of the strands from the small barrel clasp to the magnesite pendant is 8.75 inches and the overall length of the finished piece is 10.5 inches.

When I was creating this necklace the orange carnelian beads reminded me of a sprawling patch of wild flowers growing among green spring vegetation on the desert mountain slopes.
Magnesite is a versatile and beautiful mineral, cousin to turquoise and azurite. Its colors, shades, and patterns are astonishingly varied and alluring. The green magnesite is sometimes sold as turquoise, but it is a different mineral entirely with its own distinct energy. Energetically, magnesite has a calming and peaceful effect, helping the wearer to overcome fears and develop a more positive outlook. Carnelian varies from sunset-orange to deep red and is associated with protection, creativity, and good fortune.

Rain in the desert is a blessing, and the ephemeral and intensely beautiful wildflower carpets are signs of regeneration and renewal of all life.

Blue Oceans Necklace

This beautiful necklace is crafted from deep-blue and white ceramic and glass beads. It is a long necklace with no clasp; you just drop it over your head. From the tie at the back of the necklace to the blue glass disk at the front is 13.5 inches. The entire circle of the piece is 27 inches.

This necklace is strung on linen and monofilament because it is rather heavy. This is a very bold design that looks really nice by itself, or it could be worn with other jewelry as part of a set.

The blue disk shows Earth as “The Blue Planet” and the lovely pressed glass blue fish and large abstract ceramic beads represent the sea life. I love those large ceramic beads; the pattern may be a stylized design of either fish or sea turtle. If you love the blue oceans and the vast openness of the sea then this might be the design for you.

Mountain Pathways Necklace

This unusual necklace is crafted from a blend of very old and very contemporary materials: seed beads, amethyst glass, acrylic, and hand-painted Peruvian ceramic. It is a long necklace with no clasp; you just drop it over your head.

From the tie at the back of the necklace to the central bead at the front is 14.5 inches. The entire circle of the piece is 29 inches. This necklace is strung on waxed linen and is surprisingly light for its length. This is another very bold design in shades of deep amethyst, turquoise, and blue. The design on the painted Peruvian beads looks like mountain trails or pathways, perhaps even with bridges and steps. The necklace colors are evocative of deep shadowed canyons, clear skies, mountain lakes, and rugged terrain. The feel of this design is one of an ancient landscape and long-ago journeys remembered now only in legend, story, and song.

Star Swan Amulet

In the northern sky along the path of the Milky Way, Cygnus, the constellation of the Swan, takes flight. Swan is a personification of beauty, grace, and dreamtime.

This amulet has an overall length of approximately 14.5 inches, and the length of the beaded strands from the small barrel clasp to the amulet pouch itself is 10 inches. Both beaded strands and 3-sided fringes are strung on waxed linen. The hand-sewn amulet pouch is 1.5 inches square, crafted from soft, double-thickness, washable felt.

The deep night-sky purple amulet pouch is edged with starry white seed beads and further ornamented with a thick 2- to 3-inch beaded fringe on 3 sides. Both the strands and fringe feature a variety of glittering glass and acrylic beads in starlight shades of lavender and white. The amulet is set with a beautifully crafted and exquisitely painted Peruvian ceramic swan. The overall energy of the amulet is of the vast star-filled night sky, gateway to the living universe.

Cygnus is of ancient origin and was recognized as a swan even before the rise of Greece and Rome. To the shamans of the north, Cygnus is the great swan that carries the soul to the Upper World to seek guidance from the Celestials. Swan has long been associated with transformation, grace, beauty, and spiritual energy. It is interesting to note that the recent discovery of the first really earth-like planet outside our own solar system is in the constellation of the Swan. This distant world has been seriously called a “twin earth.” If you are seeking Sky Knowledge or a connection to the Star Ancestors, then the beautiful Star Swan might be a powerful guide.

Scarlet Macaw Rainforest Amulet

Scarlet macaw listens to the many voices of the rainforest. She understands the forest language and the hidden messages it conveys. She knows the songs of the wind and the whispers of spirits. She knows the stories of sun and the rain. She can also speak to humankind, but are we listening?

This beautiful rainforest amulet has an overall length of approximately 15 inches, and the length of the beaded strands from the small barrel clasp to the amulet pouch itself is 10 inches. Both beaded strands and fringes are strung on waxed linen. The hand-sewn amulet pouch is crafted from soft, double-thickness, washable felt, and measures 2.25 inches x 1.5 inches.

The dark-forest-green pouch is edged with glittering blue seed beads and further ornamented with a three-sided beaded fringe. Both the strands and fringe feature a variety of glass, acrylic, and metallic beads in vivid shades of red, orange, green, blue, and gold. The design evokes steep, green rainforest mountains with golden sunlight and brilliant color.

The hand-appliquéd and beaded mountain and sun pattern is set with a beautifully crafted and exquisitely painted 1.5-inch Peruvian ceramic Scarlet Macaw.

To many traditional and indigenous people the macaw is the intermediary between our human world and the world of the spirits and elementals. Macaw is also called the Rain Bird because of her affinity for the great summer rains. But her greatest gift is as a communicator between humanity and nature. If you are seeking a deeper connection to the natural world, especially the tropical world, then Macaw will prove a wise guardian.

Sky Dreamer Shaman’s Necklace

This necklace is one of a group introducing a new set of jewelry and other items make with tektites, a rare and very interesting stone (see Tektites page).

It connects the power of earth, sea, and sky through the portal of dreaming.

It is made of black ceramic beads, turquoise nuggets, and red/orange coral accented with seven large tektites. The piece is 22 inches long end to end and strung on waxed linen.

The seven tektites represent the seven directions: north, east, south, and west as well as earth, sky, and spirit or center.

These are large tektites, and the pendant or center stone has a calm steady energy that makes walking the dream trails a bit less precarious. The turquoise and coral are also very protective.

The energy of this piece is stability and balance amid great changes.

Good energy here for working with ancient knowledge and the Star Ancestors.

Summer Rain Necklace

This beautiful piece evokes the coming of the summer rains to the dry and dusty desert landscape. The rains bring renewal, vitality, and abundance.

The beads are glass, metallic clay, lapis, and magnesite in shades of tan, copper, and cloudy blue--all strung on waked linen. The overall length of the necklace is 18 inches end to end.

Magnesite has so many colors and patterns it has quickly become of my favorite stones. It is less well known than its turquoise and azurite cousins, but its calming energy and strong presence makes it a welcome addition to any jewelry collection.

This design intentionally highlights the large magnesite beads with their desert landscape colors and highlights. The cloudy lapis beads remind me of the first raindrops and the coppery clay, the heat of the sun still blazing through the clouds as the storm begins.

The overall energy of this necklace is the quiet power to endure and survive until the rains return, followed by celebration and renewal when the life-giving storms arrive. The cycle of the seasons and the tenacity of life itself are honored here.

Sunset Shadows Necklace

This necklace has a quiet beauty that brings to life the colors and serenity of the desert sunset.

The shadows lengthen, the wind cools, and the evening birds begin to call. The heat of the day begins to subside.

The beads are turquoise, magnesite, and glass in sunset and evening sky shades of copper, rusty tan, and blue--all strung on waxed linen. The overall length of the necklace is 18 inches end to end.

The design of this piece is simple and straightforward. Its power comes from the feeling evoked by the calming and protective presence of both turquoise and magnesite.

It gives rise to the feelings that come at the end of a day well lived and the promise of a new and finer day tomorrow.

Painted Ponies Necklace

This necklace brings to mind wild horses moving swiftly through sunlight and golden desert grasslands.

The beads are “wild horse” magnesite, amber glass, and synthetic amber--all strung on waxed linen. The overall length of the necklace is 18 inches end to end.

The oval beads with their spotted brown, tan, and white patterns are reminiscent of the traditional painted ponies of the West, hence the common name “wild horse magnesite.”

The strongly patterned magnesite blends beautifully with the golden brown synthetic amber to create a simple, yet strong design.

The feel of this piece is spaciousness, sunlight, beauty, and the power of the wild horses running free.

For those who have horse as a power animal, this necklace might be what you are looking for.

Hunter’s Moon Amulet

The full moon shines like silver in the night sky. The forest is a tangle of light and shadow. The hunter knows that skill, patience, and knowledge are needed to secure the future and provide for self and others.

This amulet has an overall length of approximately 14.25 inches, and the length of the beaded strands from the small barrel clasp to the amulet pouch itself is 9 inches. Both beaded strands and fringes are strung on waxed linen. The hand-sewn amulet pouch is 2.25 x 2 inches, and crafted from soft, double thickness, washable felt.

The midnight-black pouch is edged with glittering black and silver-colored seed beads, further ornamented with a 3-inch beaded fringe. Both the strands and fringe feature a variety of glass, clay, and metal beads in moonlight shades of black and silver. The design evokes the deep night forest under a hazy silver moon.

The hand-appliquéd and beaded full-moon pattern is set with a beautiful black obsidian arrow point crafted in the traditional way by contemporary flint-knapper Randy McCowan.

This amulet’s stone point is the sign of the hunter, but he or she may not be hunting game in the mountains or the forest. Today’s hunter may be seeking education, wisdom, or a new opportunity. The hunt may be for a new home or new employment, but, like the ancestors, our success in the hunt may require skill, patience, intuition, and a deep understanding. This is a guardian amulet for those hunting for a new beginning. The moon is the sign or change, and the dawn will soon flood the forest with warmth and light.

Amethyst Dream Necklace

This deep-violet amethyst and natural pearl necklace is set with a smoky amethyst teardrop pendant and strung on waxed linen. The necklace’s overall length is 9.5 inches (17" end to end).

Amethyst and pearl are both closely associated with higher spiritual energies and the Crown Chakra. Both have a calm, protective aura and a sense of enlightened awareness. The spherical amethyst beads balance the natural pearl shapes for an overall harmonious effect.

Amethyst is often associated with dreams and dreaming in which the stone itself plays a role. Some of the classic amethyst dreams include seeing an amethyst on the ground bringing good fortune and prosperity. Seeing an amethyst associated with white brings peace of mind through good news. Holding an amethyst crystal in a dream enhances creativity and intuition. On the other hand, a dream of a lost amethyst could mean trouble in your love relationship. A dream of giving an amethyst as a gift to another person indicates forgiveness for a wrong. A string of amethysts is symbolic of freedom, joy, and release from worries. If someone gives you an amethyst you will have good fortune, and if you buy the stone for yourself you are raising your consciousness to a higher level.

I have always loved amethyst and wear it frequently. It is definitely a stone of creativity and enlightenment.

Earth Heart Necklace

This green and gold necklace has a vibrant Earth energy that is highlighted by golden sunlight. The amber glass and stone beads are strung on waxed linen with an overall length of 8 inches (16" end to end). The design is somewhat rustic, having that ancient feeling that stone and handmade glass evoke. The large stone beads are green aventurine and the small rough nugget/chip beads are aventurine and jadeite in various shades.

These stones are associated with the Heart Chakra and bring compassion and kindness towards Earth and all living beings. These stones also foster trust and help overcome fear from past negative experiences. They help create a sense of peace and openness to new positive experiences.

There is a strong and subtle energy to this necklace, vibrant yet serene. When working on it I could sense the presence of Kwan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion, something this world really needs!

Sun & Sky Necklace

This glass and stone necklace has a sense of the open sky, spaciousness, sunlight, and shadow. The stones are lapis, tiger’s eye, and some small glass finishing beads strung on waxed linen with an overall length of 8 inches (16" end to end).

The focal point of the necklace is the golden faceted tiger’s eye sun disk. The disk is surrounded by lapis in polished spherical beads that look like tiny blue worlds seen from space and rough tumbled nugget/chip beads of various shades that look like little pieces of cloudy or clear skies turned to stone.

Lapis is associated with both the Throat Chakra and the Third Eye and promotes mental clarity. Tiger’s eye promotes discernment. Both of these stones are protective against negativity and helpful in creating a positive outcome. Clarity, vision, far-seeing, are all possible under the vast sky, illuminated by the golden sun. If you need a clear understanding and deeper insight into life’s mysteries, then this necklace might be just what you are looking for.

Canyon Lands Necklace

This unusual piece is made from shell, metal, glass, and magnesite stone beads strung on waxed linen. The shades of tan, brown, copper, and gold are evocative of the rugged southwest landscapes and open deserts. Overall length is 8.5 inches (17" end to end).

Magnesite has so many colors and patterns, it has quickly become one of my favorite stones. It is less well known than its turquoise and azurite cousins, but its calming energy and strong presence makes it a welcome addition to any jewelry collection.

This design intentionally highlights the large magnesite beads that have the most stunning patterns. They look like the western canyon lands when seen from the air. They also remind me of photos of the surface of Mars. Some of the beads even have little natural fissures or dents in them that make the patterns look even more suggestive of nature.

The energy of this necklace is relaxed and protective. Some of the distinctive stone patterns may awaken memories of other lives, other times, and other places.

Red Horses Necklace

Two red horses look out over the open grasslands to the distant mountains. They are ready for the long journey that lies ahead. The red horses necklace is made of glass, ceramic, metal, turquoise nuggets, and earth-red magnesite strung on waxed linen and fastened with a small barrel clasp. The overall length of the necklace is 10 inches (20" end to end), and the beautifully detailed Peruvian ceramic horses are about 1 x 1 inch. The polished oval magnesite beads contrast with the rugged turquoise nuggets in a natural way. Both turquoise and magnesite have a strong, calm, protective energy that encompasses earth and sky.

Horse has long been a symbol of power and freedom. Before humans climbed on the horse’s back, they were slow, plodding creatures. Then, in partnership with horse, they could travel great distances and move over the land like the wind. Historically, the partnership with horse ranks alongside the mastery of fire as one of humankind’s most important achievements. Horse is frequently associated with travel and makes a wise companion on life’s long journey.

Buffalo was the source of life for the native peoples of the Great Plains. The vast herds of buffalo were associated with abundance, gratitude, and, most of all, survival. But that was long ago. The native people and the sacred buffalo met with near extinction. Once again the wheel has turned, and both the people and the buffalo have not only survived but are beginning to thrive anew.
